Dennis was born in Dallas, Texas and had a “normal” childhood.

He was raised, mostly, on the Texas Nursery which had, in addition to two hundred twenty acres of nursery stock, a menagerie of farm critters. His first job, at 6 years old, was to feed the critters and mend the harnesses for the mule teams. For this he received the princely sum of a quarter a week.

Dennis passed through the Irving Schools like a bad case of the flue. He loved to read but hated writing reports on it. By 8th grade, he came to the conclusion that that school had nothing more to offer by way of education so, with other boys of the same opinion, he went drowning and rodeoing.

The rodeo blood was squelched when a bull broke out of its chute and caught Dennis in the middle of the arena. He wasn’t gored but had a nice chat with the birds at about forty feet above the ground. That night was his first taste of beer too. Somebody jammed a Budweiser in his hand and he sucked it dry so fast the can collapsed against his nose.

The Army had been calling Dennis since the Korean War so it was only natural when he reported for his draft physical to volunteer for the Army. This wasn’t to be, immediately. A Navy doctor classified him IV-F.

He persevered and entered service in the 49th Armored Division of the Texas National Guard. The division was activated for the Cuban missile crisis and Dennis re-enlisted in the regular Army. His first assignment was to a tank company in Germany. From that point on, flukes and opportunities in assignments had him serving in 13 different specialties over a 26 year career.

In midcareer, he served in Vietnam with the 11th Cavalry (Blackhorse) and got to speak to God. He was too badly injured to continue a career in the combat arms and was retrained in transportation and logistics.

Upon returning to duty, he married his wife, Marguerite, the sister of his assistant squad leader in Vietnam. They have 3 children and now have 4 grandchildren. All are just as ornery as grandpa.

Dennis spends his time trying to convince Southerners that the Confederacy must be resurrected, and soon.
