Whether it’s letters, pictures, furniture, books or even school report cards, treasured
heirlooms passed down from generation to generation help us understand our family’s
history and preserve the lives of our ancestors.

Author Susan Violante did not want to pass up the chance to get to know her elderly
father. To preserve his legacy, she suggested that he tape record the facts of his life. In the
first book of the “Nino Series,” Innocent War (Xlibris, April 2009), Violante captures the
life of her father as a young boy and his dramatic yet humorous adventures during
WWII in 1940s Libya and Italy.

“The ‘Nino Series’ is my journey of discovering my immigrant father’s past,” Violante
says. “The project began over 10 years ago, and little did I know the lessons I was going
to learn from listening to those five tapes. I realized the best stories are sometimes found within our own family nucleus.”

Born and raised in Venezuela, Violante grew up with a large and loving extended family, including aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents, all of which were from her mother’s side. Wanting to stay close to her family, Violante attended Rafael Urdaneta University in Maracaibo, Venezuela, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in political and business administration in 1987.

After college, Violante moved with her family to Caracas, Venezuela. There she started her first job as General Director of Funda Fauna, a foundation that protects Venezuelan endangered wildlife. But two years later, her family quickly picked up and moved to the United States after the gas riots began in 1989.

“I think the riots erupting in Venezuela reminded my father of what he experienced as a boy in Libya. He never wanted us to feel unsafe as he did. He sold all of his belongings, which paid our way to the United States.”

Once in the United States, Violante and her family moved to Boca Raton, Fla. She started her professional career as a business and administrative analyst at ANSCA Investment Inc. She also worked as an office manager and accountant for Felix Equities, Inc., Universal Petroleum Equipment & Supplies and Olen Development, Inc.

In 2006, Violante moved to Austin, Texas, where she decided to take a creative writing class to pursue her passion as a writer when her father presented her five audio tapes chronicling his life events. She realized she might have the inspiration she needed for her first series.

“After my father handed me those five tapes, I discovered what an extraordinary life my father lived,” Violante says. “I didn’t want his story to be lost in badly written chronology, so I registered for a creative writing class and learned to document the real life story of my father Nino in a fictional biography.”

Violante has published several other stories from Author House, including Emily Rosen’s Memories, Milestones and Memoirs, The Story Tellers and I Remember and The Hurt That Won’t Go Away. She also was published in the January 1997 issue The Best from LIFE Newsletter, Parents’ Press The Au Pair Dream and Creative with Words Publications.

Susan Violante lives in Austin, with her husband and their two teenage girls. She is currently working on the next title in the “Nino Series,” A New Beginning. For more information on Innocent War or Violante, please visit www.innocentwar.com and www.susanviolante.com.

Innocent War
by Susan Violante

Nino called his daughter, Susanna, and asked her to come and visit him. When Susanna discovered why her father called her, she was truly surprised. Her father handed her a stack of five tapes. He explained that her idea of putting his experiences into writing wasn’t a bad proposal after all. So, he presented her the tapes of his life – but she has to do the writing. The gesture was indeed a pleasant surprise. But that won’t just be the surprise she would be getting when she would finally hear his story…

It is 1940. The dawn of Italy’s WWII for the Italian colonies of Libya has arrived. Young Nino woke up to his regular routine; but by the end of the day, his life would have changed into a nightmare – but through Nino’s eyes, it was an adventure. Follow a boy’s exploits, through a child’s innocent view of the war’s hardships, dangers, and tragedies. Accompany him as he shares his growing up years, spiced up with Nino’s humor, innocence, and awakening. And more experiences are about to be unraveled as he continues his story…

Join Susanna as she listens the first of five recorded tapes; and witness how an Innocent War molded her father’s young mind, heart, and soul.
